The best books that take risks with structure
As anyone who’s read The Versions of Us may be able to tell, I’m very keen on novels that play around with structure – not just to play clever-clever postmodern games, but to redefine the possibilities of the novel as a form, while also weaving an absorbing, emotionally cogent tale.
In this piece for the US online literary magazine Read It Forward, I chose seven of my favourite risk-taking books – from Borges’s Fictions to Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.
