As anyone who’s read The Versions of Us may be able to tell, I’m very keen on novels that play around with structure – not just to play clever-clever postmodern games, but to redefine the possibilities of the novel as a form, while also weaving an absorbing, emotionally cogent tale.

In this piece for the US online literary magazine Read It Forward, I chose seven of my favourite risk-taking books – from Borges’s Fictions to Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf.
