To mark the inclusion of The Versions of Us in the spring 2016 Richard and Judy Book Club, WH Smith asked me to write a blog about some aspect of my experience of writing the book.

I chose the theme of a sense of place – how a writer, generally, builds the layers of research and geographical planning (some of it quite specific!) that underpins the locations in any realist novel; and how this worked for me, specifically, in writing The Versions of Us – which travels from Cambridge to south London, Los Angeles to Cornwall, Paris, Rome, Suffolk and New York…
