Lines of Retreat at the Chester Literature Festival, Sunday 19 November – 8.30pm

In October 2016, I spent a few days shut up in a house in Durham with a number of other authors and musicians, on a retreat that was to change my life.

“Life-changing” is the kind of phrase that is often over-stated, but in my case, that creative experience really did change things for me. Writing is usually such a solitary experience, so to find myself working with others – most of whom I’d never met before – was both challenging and exhilarating. The retreat culminated in a performance at the Durham Book Festival, during which I actually sang. In public. Something I hadn’t done since I was seventeen years old.

This year, I hope to repeat the experience on another similar retreat, this time organised by the Chester Literature Festival, and the folks at Storyhouse, Chester’s new theatre/storytelling venue. I’ll be in a house in North Wales with Kathryn Williams, Salena Godden, Polly Paulusma, David Ford and Mark Davies Markham, from 15 to 19 November.

On the last day of our retreat, Sunday 19, you can come and see a unique performance of the songs and collaborations we’ll have come up with during our time together. This will be a chance to hear brand-new work from a really diverse group of authors, poets, playwrights and musicians.

Tickets are £8, or £6 for under-26s, and available here.
